Every man should have a selection of blazers & sport coats in his wardrobe: they’re great for occasions when you want to look put-together, but a suit would be a bit much.
Historically, a blue blazer has been considered the cornerstone of your business casual wardrobe because it’s so versatile and easy to wear. 20 years ago, your only blue blazer option was generally very dark navy in color, the fabric had a smooth, “hard finish” (usually a plain weave) & gold buttons which conveys a more distinguished feeling. At Tom James, we offer your traditional dark navy blazer fabric along with a wonderful variety of new fabric choices & shades of blue that are equally versatile & easy to wear in our more casual society.
Why Choose a Wool Blazer?
Wool is always an excellent choice for a blazer but look for a fabric that has some “surface interest” or texture like a hopsack, our Mock Leno fancy weave, or our Holland and Sherry mesh blazers. The “basket weave” characteristic of these three fabrics keeps it very light, breathable, and naturally wrinkle resistant and gives the material a coarser texture and the kind of sporty feel that makes it look great with jeans — which really, is what you wear sport coats with most often these days. At the same time, the weave still feels substantial and drapes nicely, so that you can dress the jacket up with trousers or khakis if you wish.
How to Elevate Your Look with Bamboo Fabric
One of our most popular fabrics has been 100% bamboo or a super 140’s wool/bamboo blend. Bamboo has a very soft and silky feel along with a little more fabric luster than wool. Bamboo fabric has terrific texture, it’s exceptionally breathable and has natural wicking qualities, it’s also very durable and contains antimicrobial elements which keeps the cloth fresh, dry, and hygienic. There are 16 colors available in bamboo to entice your sartorial taste & elevate your style.
Looking for a Light, Luxury Fabric?
Another superb fabric option is our summer donegal in a luxurious wool/silk/Lycra blend in a fantastic array of blue and gray colors. Softer, lighter & more refined than traditional tweed (which can be a tad thick), this sport coat will add an elegant touch to your wardrobe. The highlight of the fabric still centers on the subtle mottling coupled with the beautiful speckled detailing which provides an eye-catching heathered effect. Our Breeze Boucle collection provides a similar heathered look and is another notable sport coat fabric option.
What Color Blazer Should I Buy?
Regarding the color, consider a royal navy, royal blue, or blue mix and style it with our exquisite horn buttons or genuine pearl buttons but you can still go with a metal button if you wish. These two qualities, texture & more vibrant color, typify the modern blue blazer.
While blue is your keystone blazer color, shades of gray and tan are excellent alternatives if your taste is more classic & conservative. If you are open to some color, consider a shade of green or cranberry which will convey a more stylish & contemporary look. Combining any of these alternative blazer colors and sport coat fabrics with dark wash jeans or a trouser is a fail-safe way to inject sophistication into your day-to-day arsenal.
Functional and handsome, you’ll find yourself throwing on any of these blazers & sport coats for everything from date night to a company dinner, to parent/teacher conferences, to your travels and trips.
